Artificial intelligence is brilliant at generating ideas. But in the world of commercial vehicle wraps, we’re seeing a new and growing problem: it’s terrible at generating usable files.
Lately, a lot of new enquiries for commercial van wraps are arriving with an AI-generated image attached. The client is excited, saying, “We’ve had this designed—can you wrap it for us?”
Our hearts sink a little, because we know the answer is “no.” At least, not from that file.
While these AI images look impressive on a phone screen, they are almost universally unusable for a professional, large-scale vehicle wrap. Here’s why your AI-generated van design is causing a major production bottleneck.
1. The Resolution Roadblock
An AI tool like Midjourney or DALL-E generates a raster image (made of pixels) at a low resolution, typically around 1024×1024 pixels. This is fine for a website icon.
A Ford Transit van is not a website icon.
To print a high-quality graphic that big, we need incredibly high-resolution files, often designed using vectors (math-based lines) that can be scaled infinitely without losing quality. When you try to “stretch” a low-resolution AI image to the size of a van, you get a blurry, pixelated mess. The file is simply not transferable to the required scale.
2. AI Doesn’t Understand Reality
An AI image is a flat, 2D picture. A van is a complex, 3D object covered in panel gaps, door handles, recessed areas, and compound curves.
AI will happily generate a beautiful design that places a key logo right over a door handle, or a line of text across a deep recess where vinyl simply cannot be applied cleanly. It has no concept of the physical limitations of the material or the vehicle’s “geography.” An experienced human wrapper designs for the van, ensuring the design is practical and durable in the real world.
3. The Laborious “Recreation” Process Because the file is unusable, that “finished” AI design has to be recreated from scratch by a professional graphic designer. This is far more laborious than starting fresh.
- Font-Finding: AI doesn’t know what fonts it used. Our designers have to spend hours trying to identify a matching typeface.
- Graphic-Copying: That cool graphic element the AI included? It’s not a separate asset we can just lift. It’s “baked into” the low-res image and must be meticulously redrawn by hand in vector software.
This all adds time, cost, and frustration to a process the client thought was already complete. In our next post, we’ll talk about the right way to use these AI images, because it’s not all bad news.
